Our extensive expertise in sleep, insomnia, wakefulness and cognitive performance has been used to evaluate over 100 compounds. Using our self contained sleep and performance laboratory we have developed models such as middle of the night insomnia and the use of rapid eye movement sleep modelling as an aid to understanding drug action.

Cognitive performance Cognitive tasks known to be sensitive to the effects of a wide range of compounds are available to measure specific skills such as visuo-motor co-ordination, vigilance, and memory.
In addition, we have simulated occupational tasks such as train driving and radar control as well as a separate laboratory with a fully interactive driving simulator. Our hypobaric chamber can be used to provide a hypoxic model of impaired performance to evaluate cognitive enhancers and related compounds. |

Monitoring sleep and cognitive performance in the field With our portable EEG recording systems, we have recorded sleep, pharmaco-EEG and cognitive performance in the homes and work places of volunteers, on board aircraft, and at locations around the world.
This has enabled us to evaluate hypnotics for their efficacy in ameliorating insomnia arising from time zone changes, and assess other compounds in alleviating the symptoms of mountain sickness.

Pharmaco-EEG We can conduct pharmaco-EEG investigations to assess the effects of drugs. The pharmaco-EEG studies are frequently integrated with cognitive performance and occupational tasks and other physiological parameters such as eye movements and body sway. |
