MaST - Detecting Ships from Space

We have considerable expertise in the processing, analysis and interpretation of imagery from synthetic aperture radar (SAR). We have used this experience to produce an automated maritime surveillance tool - MaST. MaST uses a suite of software modules to detect maritime targets from commercial satellite imagery.

MaST takes as its input SAR imagery from commercial satellites such as the European Space Agency's ERS-1 & ERS-2 and the Canadian Space Agency's Radarsat-1 satellites. It then applies analysis algorithms, which are optimised for each specific input data type and target type.

The co-ordinates of each maritime target are calculated and a sub-image (chip) of each target location is exported.

We can also fuse the MaST output with ancillary information, such as coast guard patrols, oilrig locations, or meteorological data, to form different data products.

MaST currently offers automatic ship detection, oil slick detection and wave vector analysis capabilities.
