Hydrodynamics

In addition to providing safety advice, we also provide the following range of Submarine Hydromechanics services:

  • Design and modelling of submarine hydromechanics against operational requirements
  • Design and assessment of submarine hull-forms and propulsors
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Acquisition support on submarine manoeuvring and control
In-service trials planning, execution and analysis
  • Development of submarine operator guidance and advice on new technologies and techniques

Towed array wave test Recent work for UK MoD has included support to In-Service submarines, the ASTUTE submarine programme and the Future SSBN programme. The capabilities have also been used to support surface ship programmes such as Type 45, CV(F), FSC and MARS.

One example was an initial assessment of the Recoverable Tethered Optical Fibre (RTOF) Buoy for use in submarines. The MoD Customer for this work, Mr Nicolas Bracegirdle MBE commented that:
"I cannot speak highly enough of the expertise at Haslar, the facilities used for testing and modelling RTOF and for the cheerful, timely and professional manner in which the various tasks have been performed for me. The safety features for the RTOF system have largely been developed with the help of Haslar and the Prime Contractor. All at SM-P IPT support the excellent work undertaken for us previously and look forward to a renewed agreement under MSCA."

Leading our Submarine Hydromechanics expertise is Dr Jon Bayliss, PhD MEng(Hons) CEng MIMechE MRINA RCNC. Dr Bayliss has extensive experience in the numerical and physical modelling of submarine manoeuvring, and validation of such techniques through full scale submarine trials. A particular current emphasis relates to the provision of in-service operator safety guidance & advice regarding non-standard submarine operations.

The team’s focus in 2008 is expanding the UK hydromechanics knowledge base with design and assessment of novel submarine hullforms and demonstration of the design capability for alternative propulsor solutions.
