The RN Green Passport version has been developed as a software tool using existing database software that can be employed to:
- identify the material removal requirements for a ship breaker
- define presence of all hazardous materials for the prospective buyer
- verify material removal prior to High Sea Firings
- identify the location, amount and types of material suitable for recycling
The output information is provided in table format and is designed to form the basis of a legally acceptable and auditable statement.
The International Maritime Organisation's two conventions - the management of hazardous waste in ships (in force) and the recycling of ships at the end of their life (in draft) - are major moves by the IMO to protect both the environment and people. The management of the impact of these two conventions on warships, a large number of which are awaiting disposal globally, will allow the MoD to contribute significantly in reducing the environmental impact of ship disposal. |
